Meatloaf Recipe

Meatloaf is everyone’s favorite comfort food. Here is a little about the meatloaf. The meatloaf has European origins; made of minced meat, it was mentioned in the famous Roman cookery collection Apicius as early as the 5th century. Meatloaf is a traditional German, Belgian and Dutch dish, and it is a cousin to the Italian meatball. American meatloaf has its origins in scrapple, a mixture of ground pork and cornmeal dished up by German-Americans in Pennsylvania since Colonial times. However, meatloaf in the contemporary American sense did not appear in cookbooks until the late 19th century.
Meatloaf is one of our favorite meals but shaping and baking can sometimes take more time than we’d like.

Here is a simple recipe for meatloaf
Ingredients
• 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
• 1 egg
• 1 onion, chopped
• 1 cup milk
• 1 cup dried bread crumbs
• salt and pepper to taste
• 2 tablespoons brown sugar
• 2 tablespoons prepared mustard
• 1/3 cup ketchup

Directions
• Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
• In a large bowl, combine the beef, egg, onion, milk and bread OR cracker crumbs. Season with salt and pepper to taste and place in a lightly greased 5”x 9” inch loaf pan, OR form into a loaf and place in a lightly greased 9” x 13” inch baking bowl.
• In a separate small bowl, combine the brown sugar, mustard and ketchup. Mix well and pour over the meatloaf.
• Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for approximately one hour.

Tip:
When making use of bread as a filler in meatloaf, dampen the bread and blend it together with the egg, liquid, and all the other components. The result is a more uniform texture. When making meatloaf instead of using breadcrumbs or oatmeal , use stuffing mix it gives it great flavor and is just the right filler
